TRACO Power TFI RIA 12 Power Line Surge Filters, when placed in front of any DC/DC converter, clamps momentary over-voltage transients to a safe value, protecting the converter from being damaged. During normal operation, the output voltage follows the input voltage (V_out = V_in - 2V_DC typ.) up to 168V_DC where the voltage is actively clamped. The TFI surge filters handle the strict definition laid-out in the RIA12 standard allowing transients up to 20ms at 385V_DC. This level of protection is specifically required in railway applications where high voltage transients are expected but can also be used for 72V_DC, 96V_DC, and 110V_DC battery systems in railway applications.
